Priority and significance assessment
Henry Zweiman. September 15, 2026. P43, developed as Q51.
Internal decision
The completed argument supports publication as one substantial research preprint. The originating assistant's proof audit found no remaining gap in the stated smooth orientable theorem. This is an internal research judgment, open to correction; no independent expert review, absolute priority certificate, journal acceptance or citation forecast is claimed.
The contribution is a topological obstruction: exact commutation of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map and boundary Laplacian forces genus zero. In particular, it excludes every positive genus with one or two boundary components, answering both cases of an explicit published open problem. The two boundary cases, the capping construction and the resulting classification are consolidated in one manuscript.

Romain Speciel, Journal of Spectral Theory 16 (2026), 1281-1292, final Open Problem 1.6, printed page 1284, asks whether a positive-genus oriented surface with one or two disks removed admits such a metric. The complete final twelve-page paper was read, including its proofs and references. It was obtained from the ordinary public EMS download link; no institutional access was needed. The checked arXiv history for 2503.00270 lists only v1, March 1, 2025, in which the same question is Open Problem 1.12. The manuscript cites final numbering.
Speciel's Theorem 1.3 already classifies genus-zero examples, and his other arguments exclude at least three boundary components. His simply connected argument analyzes finite Fourier support of the reciprocal boundary conformal factor after disk uniformization. Those results are prior work. The present proof constructs a degree-one holomorphic map before assuming genus zero, then uses his theorem only for the classification corollary.
The author's current papers page, marked updated September 6, 2026, was checked for later work. The current arXiv version of Stability Estimates for Commutativity Properties of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann Map, 2510.08822v1, and the final IMRN abstract were compared. Its introduction and main statements concern domain stability in dimension three and higher-dimensional potential settings. The complete final stability article was not read, and the source audit states this limitation. The August 2026 paper Steklov rigidity of Euclidean balls, 2608.05577v1, was checked through its abstract and main introduction statements: it concerns higher-dimensional Euclidean domains and the known planar disk rigidity setting, not arbitrary bordered-surface genus.
Exact-title, author/topic, positive-genus, holomorphic-trace and capping searches identified no later public resolution in the sources checked. This is a dated, bounded priority search. Unindexed, unpublished or subsequently posted work may overlap.
Existing tools and precise attribution
The finite-dimensional obstruction to harmonic conjugation is established inverse-problem theory. Belishev and Korikov, arXiv:2112.14816v2, Section 2, formulas (12)-(16), gives the exact genus rank for a related Hilbert transform and attributes it to Belishev's 2003 SIAM paper. Those pages were read directly. The original 2003 full proof was not read; its bibliographic record and the explicit primary attribution were checked. The manuscript gives a self-contained proof of its weaker rank bound and of its holomorphic trace criterion. Neither the period defect nor the trace algebra is presented as new.
Tener, arXiv:1608.02095v1, Theorem 2.33, supplies smooth conformal sewing on general bordered Riemann surfaces. This is the author preprint of the 2017 Communications in Mathematical Physics article, and the citation distinguishes preprint theorem numbering. Henriques and Tener, arXiv:2410.05929v1, Theorem 3.1 and Proposition 3.6, give the disk and local annulus welding used for the cap. The complete proof of Theorem 3.1 and the smooth nonzero-derivative statement in Theorem 3.2 were read. The manuscript explains the local collar reduction and proves the energy and boundary-metric consequences. It does not depend on a spin or conformal-field-theory assertion.
The boundary trace theorem, the Poincare inequality with nonempty Dirichlet boundary portion, the variational existence theorem, and smooth harmonic regularity are standard analytic inputs. The argument principle needed for the degree calculation is derived explicitly from Stokes' theorem and local zero multiplicities.
Substantive step and significance
A finite-rank Hilbert-transform defect does not by itself force genus zero. Exact commutation first makes that defect scalar on each real Fourier plane, so only finitely many planes can fail the determinant identity. The algebra of holomorphic traces then links different frequencies: multiplying adjacent high modes produces a nonzero mode-one trace, except in a case resolved by a removable-singularity quotient. This supplies a globally one-to-one holomorphic map even when the initial surface was allowed arbitrary genus.
The remaining boundary count is handled by a geometric construction with an exact variational formula. Arclength welding to a Euclidean disk preserves the residual commutator under a Schur complement. Coercivity comes from the uncapped boundary, so the proof covers the constant mode and does not assume that the disk operator is invertible. Genus is preserved during the reduction.
These steps resolve the full remaining topological question in the published classification, over all smooth metrics in the orientable class. The method connects boundary operator symmetry to multiplicative holomorphic traces and to conformal sewing. That combination gives a reasoned case for serious spectral-geometry, analysis and complex-analysis review at the program's intended standard. The theorem is concise, depends on substantial classical tools, and concerns a specific exact-commutation problem; a journal may assess its scope more narrowly. Its suitability for Advances in Mathematics or Transactions of the AMS cannot be established by an internal audit.
Counting and open boundaries
Count at most one paper after exact public-file verification. Do not count the connected-boundary proof, the two-boundary reduction, the full classification corollary or any future explicit-spectrum calculation separately. Quantitative commutator stability, nonorientable classification and low-regularity extensions remain outside the result. Outside mathematical review is still needed.
